Ecoblend® Ocean-Bound Plastic Compounds
From ocean-bound plastic feedstocks to application-ready engineering materials
Ecoblend® ocean-bound plastic compounds from Kumho Sunny Plastics convert selected plastic waste at risk of entering marine environments into reliable, application-ready materials. Through feedstock control, polymer-alloy design, compatibilization, impact modification and flame-retardant technology, Ecoblend® helps manufacturers introduce recycled content without overlooking mechanical performance, processability or regulatory requirements.
The Ecoblend® OBP portfolio includes halogen-free flame-retardant PC/PET, high-impact modified ABS and recycled polyamide solutions for electrical, electronic, consumer and industrial components.
From ocean-bound recycled feedstocks to consistent engineering-plastic compounds.
Why Ocean-Bound Plastic Requires Material Engineering
Ocean-bound recycled PET offers a relatively standardized source, good recycling quality and meaningful supply potential. However, recycled PET can be brittle, and its crystallization behavior may limit direct use in appearance parts and demanding engineering applications.
Kumho Sunny Plastics addresses these challenges through controlled raw-material management and targeted modification. Ecoblend® compounds are engineered around the requirements of the final application, including recycled-content targets, impact strength, flame retardancy, reinforcement, appearance and processing stability.
OBP PC/PET-NH: Halogen-Free Flame-Retardant Compounds
Ecoblend® OBP PC/PET-NH combines recycled PC with ocean-bound recycled PET to create halogen-free flame-retardant engineering plastics. The solution is designed for electrical and electronic housings that require recycled content together with mechanical performance and flame-retardant properties.
Concept application of Ecoblend® OBP PC/PET-NH in electrical and charging-control housings.
Two representative grades are available:
- KCA9341NH: 42.5% total PCR content, including 12.5% ocean-bound recycled content.
- KCA9371NH: 72.05% total PCR content, including 12.5% ocean-bound recycled content.
Both grades achieve a tensile strength of 62 MPa, matching the PC/ABS-NH benchmark in the supplied test data.
KCA9341NH delivers 84 MPa flexural strength, 600 J/m notched Izod impact strength and an HDT of 82°C. KCA9371NH provides a higher recycled-content option while maintaining 86 MPa flexural strength, 530 J/m notched Izod impact strength and an HDT of 78°C.
The supplied technical data reports UL 94 V-0 / 5VB performance at 1/16 inch for both grades.
Performance comparison based on Kumho Sunny Plastics product data. Final values and test conditions should be confirmed in the applicable product datasheet.
These properties make Ecoblend® OBP PC/PET-NH suitable for evaluation in applications such as:
- Electrical and electronic equipment housings
- Charging-control and power-management enclosures
- Consumer-electronics components
- Flame-retardant structural housings
- Components requiring both recycled content and dimensional stability
Final material selection should be based on part geometry, wall thickness, flame-retardant requirements, processing conditions and market-specific regulations.

OBP-Modified ABS: Higher Impact Strength with Recycled Content
Ecoblend® OBP-modified ABS is developed for applications that require recycled content together with high impact resistance and reliable molded-part performance.
Kumho Sunny Plastics applies strict feedstock management covering mechanical properties, black spots and restricted substances. Customized compatibilizers, impact modifiers and optimized extrusion processes are then used to improve the performance of the recycled formulation.
Concept application of Ecoblend® OBP-modified ABS in durable equipment and electronics housings.
Two representative OBP-modified ABS grades are:
- ABS-MP: 15% ocean-bound recycled content
- ABS-MQ: 30% ocean-bound recycled content
Under the reported ASTM D256 test conditions at 23°C, ABS-MP achieves a notched Izod impact strength of 336.06 J/m, while ABS-MQ reaches 293.04 J/m.
For comparison, the supplied data reports 180 J/m for virgin ABS and 150 J/m for conventional PCR ABS under the same test conditions.
ABS-MP also delivers 41.40 MPa tensile strength, 57.63 MPa flexural strength and a Vicat softening point of 95°C. ABS-MQ provides 43.83 MPa tensile strength, 62.17 MPa flexural strength and a Vicat softening point of 98°C.
Notched Izod impact strength according to the values reported in the supplied Ecoblend® technical material.
The balance of recycled content and impact performance makes these compounds suitable for evaluation in:
- Durable consumer-product housings
- Electronic and electrical enclosures
- Equipment shells and protective covers
- Injection-molded structural components
- Applications requiring higher impact resistance than conventional PCR ABS
Color, surface appearance, impact targets and restricted-substance requirements can be adjusted according to the application and validation plan.

Recycled and Sustainable PA for Reinforced Components
The Ecoblend® sustainable polyamide platform includes physical recycling routes for ocean-bound PA and chemical recycling routes for PA6.
The physical recycling process covers feedstock collection, washing, drying, pelletization and compound modification. Chemical recycling creates an additional pathway for recovering PA6 resources for spinning and modified engineering-plastic applications.
Concept application of recycled and sustainable PA compounds in reinforced technical components.
Available development directions include:
- Glass-fiber-reinforced PA: rPA6, bio-PA56 and bio-PA510, with reported glass-fiber loading ranges of 10%-60%.
- Glass-fiber-reinforced flame-retardant PA: rPA6 and bio-PA56, with reported glass-fiber loading ranges of 10%-30%.
- Toughened PA: bio-PA56 solutions for applications requiring improved impact behavior.
These materials can be evaluated for reinforced brackets, connectors, gears, clips, cable-management parts and other injection-molded technical components.
Because the supplied material does not provide comparable mechanical-property data for the complete PA portfolio, grade-specific performance values should be confirmed according to the selected resin, reinforcement level and application.
Third-Party Validation and Compliance Support
Selected Ecoblend® OBP materials have passed UL 2809 OBP validation and UL 94 flame-retardancy testing.
Grade-specific documentation can also support compliance assessment for:
- RoHS
- REACH
- California Proposition 65
Certification and regulatory status must be confirmed for the final material grade, color, part thickness, manufacturing location, target market and end-use application.
